Fiestas Patronales

The Saint’s festivities are the name of the festival. During centuries they have consisted of acts, faith and popular expressions in which year after year the citizens of Santo Domingo recall and modernize the most important moments of the Saint’s work and life. The festivities are not only history or a cultural challenge, is more a recovery of a story that became a memory of the Saint.

Opening speech with dulzaine and blush: On the 25th of April the drums and the bagpipes come out and in the afternoon the streets are filled with music steps and distractions. Two weeks after, on the 11th of may the brotherhood and the scribes accompanied by drums and bagpipes go to the houses of the young damsels....

Members of the brotherhood, girls, teenagers and young people with elegant baskets hanging of their hips knack door by door to take each house the saint’s bread. It is bread with a decorated obverse with the saint’s image and covered with a mixture of egg yolk. This bread represents the presence and memory ...

On the morning there is a ram march. Those rams will be killed to make the saints lunch. The afternoon will begin with the bunch procession. In a cart pulled by a couple of oxes they take the brunches of a holm oak to the cathedral. After being blessed they are put around the saints sepulcher. The afternoon ...

The procession of the saint’s bread and pilgrims starts. Young ladies dressed in white carry the breads in elegant baskets and all of it symbolizes the purity of the saint. They are symbol of the women that devoted their lives to the work of Santo Domingo. Nowadays they also join the procession horses...

During the night in the saint’s house, also known to be the pilgrims albergue, some of the members of the brotherhood and some women cook an excellent vegetable stew made with chickpeas, chards, onions, ram and other products. After the communion and having received god’s blessing the stew is served among the citizens ...

It is the last important day of the festivity. They named and take over the new brotherhood that among the next year will carry out with the obligations. The priors that leave give the new ones the keys of the saint’s house and also zinc box with objects from 1909. The new members are welcomed and they receive a medal and a diploma.

It is the festivity of San Isidro patron saint of farmworkers.

Fiestas de Gracias

The 18th and 19th of September it is celebrated the thanks and hermosilla festivity. There are similar to others in la rioja and it is a way of giving thanks for the harvest gathered. The first day represents the harvest and the main act is a procession with figures of Santo Domingo and the Square Virgin that hosts the city. When the procession is back the goodbye ritual begins and the images separate. It is tradition when this happens to make somersaults when the final act is taking place.

Although it is a religious celebration there is also a secular celebration very popular among the citizens of Santo Domingo. It is a competition of stews in whish the main element is potatoes. As the same time of the competition the City Hall organizes a potatoes and chorizo tasting in which are distributed more than 4000 portions among the people.

The 19th of September is the day when it is honored the memory of Jeronimo Hermosilla, the only canonized saint in Rome. This festivity is celebrated the day after thanks festivity and it has a religious character.

bibliography of Jeronimo Hermosilla

When the time arrives the entire city celebrates the heroism of Jeronimo Hermosilla that turned out to be a great figure for the citizens that are proud to say that in the walls that surrounded the city is where Jeronimo gained popularity because of his devotion to others.

Jeronimo Hermosilla was born on the 30th of September in Santo Domingo de la Calzada in La Puebla neighbor in a humble family. Bernabe Garrido priest of the church baptized him in the cathedral at that moment. His birth certificate is still n the cathedral.

At the age of 10 his father died and he left Santo Domingo and moved to Cordovin with his brothers. He lived there ntil he was 20. Living there he began studying for the church in a Seminar and the 4th of October 1819 he took the holy orders

...Missionary...

His novitiate was interrupted by the politic disagreements of the time that caused great hostility towards the church. He left the convent at age 21 and joined the king’s army until the 25th of May 1825.

When he went back to his religious studies he kept on saying that he would go to the missions with his friend and brother Vicario Romero to Tokin. On the 24th of August 1824 took a ship from Cadiz to Manila. The 2nd of January 1825 they arrived. From the beginning Hermosilla turned out to be the apple of the bishop eyes. Bishop Delgado is the one that gives the Tonkin name of Vaong to Hermosilla. After eight years as missionary in Vietnam he was appointed Provincial Vicar and representative of Eastern Tonkin.

...Bishop and apostolic vicar...

In 1841 he is consecrated bishop and apostolic vicar of eastern Tonkin that gave him power in Rome. He refuses his new position so the archbishop of manila has to intercede so he accepts. The work done by Hermosilla was remarkable.

...Kidnappings and Persecutions...

Mandarins were overwhelmed by large amount of gold given by the king in exchange of European missionaries. Hermosilla and his brother were frequently scared so the had to hide. His first persecution was in 1848. He wrote in letters that during that time was when there were sackings, whippings, and muggings.

LThe second persecution began on the 3rd of September 1854 date when the edict was declared. In the edict it was imposed death sentence to missionaries and everyone that hid or protected them. To make this law easier the mandarin king ordered the destruction of churches and homes so Hermosilla was obligated to live running in order to survive. On the 15th of January 1856 he was kidnapped for 12 days. Fortunately the mandarins were after his money. After paying 8400 reales as ransom he was liberated. However Hermosilla’s difficulties did not end here. In July 1857 a new persecution lead by Tuc-Duc started.

From that moment on all Christians had to carry written in their faces Top-Dao (false religion). Without strength and as a last resort to remain alive missionaries asked the Spanish and French government for help. That’s how half of them could get out of Tonkin and returned home.

The 4th persecution and the last one lead by Tuc-Duc was the one that ended with Hermosilla’s life. In 1860 the persecution became an obsession for the mandarins that were motivated to do it for a ransom of 300 silver ounces.

...Martyrdom...

when in 1861 started the last persecution Hermosilla was arrested by Nguyen but he managed himself to scape. After escaping he secretly continued with his apostolic activity going unnoticed. The betrayal of a soldier is what got him arrested again and this time he could not escape. His martyrdom was with another two Dominican missionaries: Valentin de Berrio-Ochoa and Pedro Almato.

...Finally ¡Saint!...

On the 26th of June 1998 Hermosilla is canonized. Citizens of La Rioja went to Saint Peter Square in Rome and Santo Domingo joined the Vatican’s acts. During a whole week the city celebrated the naming of the new saintliness.

Ferias de Santo Domingo de la Calzada

During the year there are two important fairs: one that takes place on the 17th and 28th of February and the Conception Fair that takes place on the 8th of December. This fair became important during the 30’s and 40’s. With the mechanization of the agriculture the fair that hosted dealers became less important and in 1985 became the Agriculture Machines Fair. In 1990 took place the First International craftwork fair.

Medieval Market

we have to go back in time to the medieval era when citizens of Santo Domingo received merchants and craftsmen from all over. They’re where a lot of visitors and Alfonso X gave royal privileges to the fair celebration Wizards, jugglers, musicians and minstrels where all over the old town livening up the city. Soldiers, medieval banners, knights, goblins and elf accompanied the mayor during the opening and closing acts.

“Que los omnes de la villa de Santo Domingo Agan cada año Feria en su villa Et todos aquellos que viniesen a la feria Que ayan vengan salvos e seguros….”
